Dunster is a picturesque mediaeval village, situated between the coast of the Bristol Channel and Exmoor. Known as the gateway to Exmoor, Dunster has many reasons to visit, other than just Rohan.
Dunster Castle, run by the National trust, is the most dominant and visible attraction; the oldest parts dating back to the 12th Century. The Castle holds many events throughout the year including Falconry, Sheep Dog displays and bat walks.
In the main street is the Dunster Yarn Market which was built in the 13th Century. If you look carefully you will see the result of cannon fire from the castle caused during the civil war, there is a hole in one of the roof beams.
Dunster railway station is only half a mile away, and is one of the stops on the West Somerset Steam Railway. This line connects the seaside town of Minehead, to Bishops Lydeard, there are many journeys daily, mainly by steam and on occasions diesel trains.
One of the main attractions of Dunster is Exmoor itself. Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on the moor, is only five miles away. Spot Red Deer and Exmoor Ponies on your walks across the hills. (Remember to keep a beady eye out for the famous Beast of Exmoor!).
There are many walks just minutes from the store. The start or finish, depending on which way you are heading, of the South West Coast Path is only a couple of miles away in Minehead.
Dunster shop is next door to the Exmoor Visitor centre which provides information on walking routs and maps; here you can also arrange to take a safari ride across the moors.
Come to Dunster for a weekend break and stay in many of the quaint and beautiful Hotels, Guest Houses and B&B’s and explore the local area. Many hotels serve lunches and afternoon teas as well as evening meals.
Combine a stay at the Luttrell Arms, recently under new management, with good food and the feeling of the country with an open fire and family friendly rooms. Another good place to stay is the Castle Hotel, good food and beautifully modern. The Yarn Market Hotel would be a good choice if you’re looking for a hotel that organises guided walks in the area. For those of you looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion then look no further than Reeves Restaurant in the centre of the village.
There are many tearooms in Dunster, try Locks Tea Rooms, Cobblestones or Tessa’s for tea and scones, coffee and homemade cakes.
Directly outside of Rohan Dunster is the Dunster Lunchbox, run by Cliff Langdon, which sells tea/coffee, sandwiches and pasties, not forgetting Style’s locally made ice-cream for those hot summer days. Here you can buy your lunch and snacks before you go up onto the moor to try out your new Rohan purchases.
How to find us.
If you are entering the village along the A396 from the Wheddon Cross side, follow through the village centre past the Yarn Market, the road turns a sharp right and then about 80 metres on your right is Rohan Dunster. Drive for a further 50 metres and the car park entrance is on your right; which is pay and display. Free parking can some times be found in the village centre next to the Yarn Market, if you are members of the National Trust you can park in the Castle car park for free. (To get to the castle car park continue past the pay and display car park to the traffic lights, turn right and next right over a cattle grid).
If entering the village from the A39, (Minehead to Williton road), directly before going through the traffic lights bear left into the village, then turn left into the main village car park, Rohan Dunster is at the top of the car park, up the steps and to your left.
