Hebden Bridge is a beautiful market town nestled in the Calder Valley, eight miles west of Halifax, situated at the confluence of the River Calder and the River Hebden. Hebden Bridge (originally Heptenbryge) started as a settlement where the Halifax to Burnley hilltop packhorse route dropped down into the valley. The word Hebden is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon Heopa Denu, “bramble (or wild rose) valley”. The town developed during the 19th and 20th centuries due to its access to major wool markets and the steep wet hills – perfect for the water powered weaving mills. The wool trade brought with it the Rochdale Canal and the Manchester and Leeds Railway.
Hebden Bridge has developed over the past few decades into a haven for local artists and the town itself has an unusually high density of independent shops – well worth a visit is the Yorkshire Soap Company, the source of the bubbles that float throughout the town! There always seems to be some local event taking place, from the Annual Easter Monday Duck Race to the Hebden Bridge Blues Festival, the Hebden Bridge Handmade Parade to the Vintage Car Weekend.
Our shop could not be better situated on St Georges Square, opposite the site of the Old Bridge Mill. There are plenty of walks from the town itself, one that takes in Hell Hole Rocks (better than it sounds!), or if you want a challenge there is a great 13 mile (21k) mountain bike ride starting from Hebden Bridge considered moderate to challenging for mountain bikers – download the PDF from Pennine Bridleway.
